The researcher tackles "Bastard complex" in The Lover, a novel of Marguerite Duras. In general, the bastard complex is based on the suffering of a main character that feels orphaned by parents who are still alive. In order to improve this condition, the hero tries to find an imaginary father or to obtain fame due to literary and artistic creation.
In The Lover, Marguerite Duras tries to leave The Donnadieu, her biological family and to consider the chineese man whom she loves an imaginary father. In fact, this lover is a symbolic father who provides her not only the money she needs but also love and protection as she suffers from lack of affection and attention in her family home. Moreover, she tries to be a famous writer so that she can be the daughter of her own books because she fails to be the daughter of her biological family.
The point of discussion of this research is to prove that mother's cruelty and family conflict can have a good effect as the constructive suffering has developed the daughter's talents and skills, specially in the Literary Field. Marguerite Donnadieu is now Marguerite Duras; she doesn't belong anymore to The Donnadieu, this miserable family that doesn't appreciate her talents. In The Lover, the writer finds happiness only when she is separated from her family.
The researcher studies the history of the "Bastard" by focusing on the "Constructive suffering" according to a theory of Dominique Maingueneau and on the notion of "ideal filiation", an idea that was tackled by Freud.
The researcher is going to use the argumentative method and to discuss its research in three axes:
1- a thesis: Belonging to the Donnadieu, the biological family.
2- a antithesis: Bastard complex.
3- a synthesis: Ideal filiation and literary creation.
The researcher ends up his study reaching the conclusion that the writer of The Lover succeeds in the literary field. This is considered a victory, an ideal filiation that compensates Marguerite for the long years of pain and suffering she lived with the cruel members of her biological family, specially the mother and the older brother. Now she gets a new identity: she writes her novels under the pseudonym "Marguerite Duras" as if she didn't belong to the Donnadieu, this miserable family that didn't give her neither attention nor affection.
